Matrices

Much can be learned about the history and process of printing by examining matrices, including copper plates, woodblocks, and lithographic stones. AAS has a representative collection of printing matrices dating from the late eighteenth century through the 1950s. This collection includes stereotyped plates for printing a primer, engraved copper plates from an edition of Robinson Crusoe, a woodblock illustrating Antiquarian Hall, and a printer's set-up for a newspaper masthead. In addition, several artists collections include matrices.
